Introduction to Electrical Industry Trades

Challenge

Apprentice Training for the Electrical Industry (ATEI) is an organization dedicated to attracting prospects to the electrical trades apprenticeship programs and career pathway. They approached Mosaic Learning looking for a way to engage with a more diverse group of individuals and help them understand the value of a skilled trades electrical career.

My Role

As Senior Instructional Designer, I was tasked with designing and developing an online informational and marketing activity that students could find on the website or be directed to when they expressed interest or reservations about an electrical career.

Action(s)

I worked with stakeholders to identify key challenges discouraging young people from seeking a career in the electrical trades. I then storyboarded and wrote content (text and voiceover scripts) to address those challenges and proposed imagery and interactions to help various underrepresented groups “see themselves” in an electrical career. Upon approval, I developed the informational activity in Captivate, designing a template and graphics, interactions, and voiceover narration, piloting and publishing the final activity for web hosting on the marketing page for a Philadelphia-based electrical union.

Result(s)

The informational e-learning allowed candidates to “see themselves” in various roles of an electrical trades career path and consider taking the next steps (outlined in the activity). IBEW 87 and ATEI felt it went “beyond expectations” and reported a positive uptick in discussions and interest in apprenticeships by underrepresented groups after they posted it to their website.
