Survey Development Workbook

Challenge

At NSA’s National Cryptologic University, surveys for course evaluation or front end analysis were typically asking questions that provided only net promoter scores or data that was not clearly actionable and tied to organizational goals.

My Role

As an Instructional Designer with Learning Tradecraft, I sought to share insight from evidenced-based approaches such as using Performance-Focused Learner Survey questions and applying the Talent Development Reporting Principles framework to analysis surveys.

Action(s)

I applied knowledge from using performance-focused survey questions, training in data analytics, and team training in the Talent Development Reporting Principles framework (TDrp) to develop a Survey Development Workbook of best practices for planning and delivering surveys, writing questions that collect actionable data, and reporting results to enable data-informed decision-making. I shared the workbook across the training team and ad hoc with mission team members involved with survey data collection.

Result(s)

The Survey Development Workbook inspired people to pursue use of the various methodologies so that they could gather actionable data as the first step in data-informed decision-making. I later revised and shared this workbook at the National Park Service, where I led a Book Club to introduce and apply performance-focused learner surveys.
