Challenge
The National Park Service leads the world in training people to work through federal and tribal laws and preservation policies to ensure cultural preservation of properties and materials. Due to legal action, it was necessary provide training for a broad range of employees, even those not formally dedicated to preservation. The NPS learning experience platform was being shut down and the Cultural and Natural Resources (CNR) Directorate training team needed to re-purpose all materials into SCORM-based training on the Department of Interior’s learning management system (LMS; Totata/Moodle).
My Role
As Senior Instructional Designer with the Stephen T. Mather training team, I worked with the CNR Training Manager to identify key trainings to prioritize for conversion and augment/develop content into e-learning courses to be delivered as SCORM packages on the LMS.
Action(s)
I downloaded all content, worked with subject matter experts to write learning objectives and resolve conflicting content, then outlined multi-module e-learning. I developed engaging e-learning with interactions and knowledge checks (e.g., Fact vs, Myth) in Articulate RISE for training in Section 106 and Cultural Resource Foundations, incorporating high impact visuals, video, and 508 accessibility. I then conducted internal pilots, exported SCORM files, and set the courses up with evaluations on the DOI LMS for launch.
Result(s)
The series of new CNR foundational courses were well-received, with feedback remarking on the increased level of understanding and interactivity in the trainings. The courses were cited as positive exemplars that proactively supported agency-wide transition to the DOI LMS as the “learning system of record” for the NPS.
