Challenge
The National Electrical Contractor’s Association (NECA) shared with Mosaic Learning that trainees in advanced construction management were were increasingly unable to commit much time to in-person training away from work. Those that could attend were often unable to complete pre-reading.
My Role
As Senior Instructional Designer, I was responsible for proposing rapid development solutions to shorten training time and increase ability of busy working managers in training to prepare for hands-on, in-person certification training.
Action(s)
I collaborated with the NECA training contact to discern foundational concepts that could be pulled from in-person training and presented as e-learning pre-work. I wrote/validated objectives, storyboarded content and interactions, wrote voiceover scripts and contracted for recording, and sourced images or collaborated with the graphic designer for assets, then templated and developed the course in Storyline. I conducted internal course pilots and applied feedback from the stakeholder reviews (generated from the internal Review tool) to output the SCORM files and launch them on the NECA learning management system.
Result(s)
The Role of the Electrical Project Manager was the first of three self-directed courses of pre-work that NECA managers-in-training could take as their schedules allowed. New managers came to class with a common understanding ready for project-based work and could review the courses as resources back on the job.
*Bonus#1: This was the first course created in Storyline for the company; I was able to introduce the team and stakeholders to a more rapid and flexible suite of development tools for the increased number of e-learning requests ahead of the pandemic shutdown.
*Bonus#2: NECA marketed the courses for people unsure about taking management training; they could take them to see what management may involve and decide if they wished to follow that training track.
