Challenge
In the face of widescale Military BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure), children were forced to move from miliary base schools into public community schools. Public school teachers had little to no understanding about the culture and circumstances these children faced or how to integrate them successfully. The JHU School of Public Health engaged Accelera-Romar to develop asynchronous training as support.
My Role
As contract Instructional Designer/Writer for this 18-month assignment, I wrote/edited content from lengthy research-based documents, chunking and reorganizing content for online presentation. I working very closely with the SME / Author to establish “a voice” and edit down content, choose interactions/animations while maintaining the production schedule. I then storyboarded 14 modules of content, locating/assigning photos, animations, audio, writing interactions, and quiz questions.
Action(s)
Challenges met for this project included converting lengthy text-based research with minimal/dwindling budget, making judicious use of engaging graphics, and Reality Check interactions/animations. I managed change and production despite team and management turnover for this long-term project.
Results(s)
A 14-module web-based asynchronous course for educators on assisting military children with integration to the public school environment. This federally-funded project found longevity as an online course through the University of Hawaii.
